Distressed Turquoise Sideboard

I picked up this fantastic sideboard a few weeks ago from Craigslist and immediately posted it to the Twice Lovely Facebook page

… where it was immediately pounced upon and snatched up for a custom paint job.  And I couldn’t have been more excited when it’s new owner said she would love a distressed turquoise with a dark stained top. So I set to work mixing up a custom turquoise with my DIY Chalk Paint Recipe. The top was stripped and stain Minwax Dark Walnut and given a top coat of Minwax Tung Oil.  I’m in serious love.  Very sad to be seeing this one leave.

  10. Beautiful work! I'm starting my first project and have looked at many of your pieces for inspiration. I've been pinning your projects a lot. :) My questions are not specifically for this piece, just in general... I am planning to use the DIY Chalkboard paint recipe you have used. When you use dark wax what kind do you use? Many people use Annie Sloan wax exclusively. Have you tried any other brands? Are there any other good alternatives that I could find at local hardware stores for a more modest budget? If I find I enjoy these types of projects and I'm good at it, I would be interested in trying out the higher quality items, but for a first project (that may be my only project), it just doesn't make sense. Gotta keep the costs down a bit. Also, how do you apply the wax? I have seen a lot of people say they use the Annie Sloan wax brush, but that brush is like $35. Is it okay to just use a rag? Thanks for your help!

    1. I use Minwax (just natural, not dark) applied with an old t-shirt. Leave a day, then buff with another old t-shirt. Old socks work well too. I've heard Fiddes & Sons is good too, as is Howards Wax. Good luck!
