Faux Zinc Topped French Side Tables

I picked up a cute little pair of French, two-tier side tables from my very favorite thrift store a while ago.  (Yes, the same favorite thrift store I bought this headboard at.  Stay away!!)

They were leather topped, but the leather had seen far better days.  I knew I had to do something about them.  I formulated the plan to prime the whole of the tables with gray primer, including the leather tops.  Then I went back and painted the tops with some Mirrored Silver Metallic Spray Paint I bought from Ace Hardware.  I really loved the stuff!!  I think it’s going to be my go-to silver from now on.  Fabulous stuff!

Once the silver dried, I went back with some black craft paint that I watered down into a glaze, painted it on and dabbed it off with a piece of paper towel.  It turned out looking just like zinc, with the texture from the leather!  I love it!

Then I masked off the table tops and sprayed the body of the tables ivory.  After that had thoroughly dried, I hand-distressed with some fine sandpaper until some of the gray primer showed through in places and on the edges.

Some of the silver spray paint and black glazing tied in the original brass handles, and I called ‘em done!

Speaking of my very favorite thrift shop, guess what I picked up there day before yesterday.  Check this awesomeness…

I’ve wanted to do an antique sideboard for about as long as I’ve been refinishing furniture, so I’m on cloud nine to find such an awesome one for a great price!  What should I do to it?  It has to live up to it’s potential.  ;)

Happy weekend!!

  2. Oh how I yearn to find such a sideboard. I've seen a few out there in the land of Craigslist, but never in my budget...I do afterall have to make something on it once it is redone. Always on the hunt. It was your lucky day!

  7. I've been looking for just such a sideboard for two years now. The last one I found priced out at $1500, which is roughly more than $1425 I was hoping to pay for it, lol.

  9. Fantastic. That zinc is great! The sideboard is jaw-dropping beautiful, but to banish it's stuffiness for Livy's, how bout shiny clean dark grey with goldy-yellow floral knobs? Understated quirky, I say :)

  10. I love your projects! The faux-zinc tables turned out just gorgeous. We just bought an antique library table with a badly beaten up leather top. You're making me think.

    The sideboard--I'd go laquer!

  22. Those side tables are so chic! I have always favored that style of table. And by the way, that sideboard is heavenly! My mom inherited one like that & it just takes my breath away. I love holding history in my hands. You can just feel its energy.

PS- I used to live in AZ & if I knew where this thrift shop of yours was I would be giddy to have joined you! I respect & admire you, fellow thrift store/dumpster scrounger :)

  24. I hit the town yard sale yesterday and picked up a bunch of furniture items I want to redo and was cruising your blog looking for ideas. Imagine my surprise when the little two tiered side table I was looking for ideas for is this same table. I love the design in the top of the table but the people I bought it from were smokers so there are cigarette burns on it, but for $5 I can deal with that. I love what you did with it.
