The Fancy Desk

I’ve been teasing you with this desk for ages, especially if you’re a Twice Lovely Facebook Fan.  (And if you’re not, why the heck not?!?!  You too can be privy to all the juicy, pre-blog sneak peeks.)  Like many other pieces in my workshop, I picked it up right before the Christmas holidays came and struck me down for the count with morning all-day sickness.  It might hurt some of you if I said how much I got it for, so we’ll just say “not enough.”  ;)  Check out this loveliness:

I’ve never seen anything like it in all my days!  It’s so incredibly unique that I’ve been completely paralyzed when it came to redoing it.  I’ve had no fewer than 10 different plans of attack.  First I thought white, but white is so plain.  This little lady needed something special!  Then I thought maybe a glazed metallic, but with all that fanciness, we don’t want to be too “Liberace” with the thing.  I had some great suggestions on the FB fan page.  Gray was certainly a contender, as was a pale turquoise.  But in the end, I kept coming back to the idea of a pale, seaglass green, distressed and glazed to bring out all the fantastic carving.

Just to show you all what a difference some distressing and glazing does for a piece, here is the desk after I had it painted in the seaglass green:

The desk is certainly pretty, the color’s pretty, BUT add some distressing and glazing and it becomes something AMAZING!!

I kept all the original hardware, just gave it a good scrubbing in my ol’ favorite mixture of salt and white vinegar.

Even the back is super sexy!

I think this is my favorite piece I’ve ever gotten to work on.  It really is a one-of-a-kind gem.  It looks even better in person!

I leave the day after tomorrow for a 6-day childless getaway with my love in the fantastic Monterey, CA.  We had our honeymoon there almost 11 years ago and I’m so excited to go back!  Then when we get back, I have a week and a half to crank through several more projects before the Junkrestore Vintage Market in Scottsdale March 31, April1st and April 2nd.  Are you coming?  It’s going to be a blast!!

‘Till then,

It was beautiful just painted, but as you said the distessing just made it. Who is the paint by that you used? What a wonderful job you did, feel great about yourself.
