Transformed Hutch and Some News…

Well, I know the first thing everyone thinks of when they hear that there’s “news” is pregnancy, and if you were thinking that, this time, you would’ve been 100% correct!  I’m expecting baby #4 in August 2011!  I started feeling nauseous about a week ago, which was about a week before I even missed my period.  (TMI?)  Not sure how that bodes for me.  And I’m not sure how being pregnant then having a newborn will bode for the furniture refinishing and blogging, but I’m trying to just take things as they come.  But I thought I’d warn all my bloggy friends that if you aren’t hearing from me as much as you’re used to, or you start wondering “Hey!  What the heck happened to Ann Marie?  Did she drop off the face of the Earth or something?”, I’m just growin’ a baby over here!  I’m probably nauseous and/or tired and/or cranky and haven’t had the energy for projects, but I’m still here and still very much appreciate our readers!!

In other news, last week I finished up a hutch that went to a local boutique for display.  It’s also up for sale there.  Here’s how it started out:

P1040452

My plan was to replace the glass on the top with chicken wire, strip and stain dark the top of the buffet part, and paint the rest a soft white.  I used mostly the original hardware, which (I thought) was very tarnished (nearly black) brass.

P1040592

I mixed up some homemade brass polish with white vinegar and salt.  When I was done, it turned out the pulls were not brass like I thought, but copper!  What a great surprise!  I love how the patinaed copper looks with the white paint!

So here she is all finished up!

And here she is all loaded with wares at the boutique:

I’m so glad I got this one done before I started feeling icky!  :)

  1. I'm about to inherit my great grandmothers China Cabinet that looks almost just like this one and I JUST got through googling for a white china cabinet with a brown top. This is EXACTLY what I was dreaming of! I even planned on the chicken wire!

  27. congratulations on the baby! and the hutch ;) I've been thinking of going the boutique route with my furniture, offering it 'free' as display pieces as long as they keep a tag on it for sale. Was it pretty easy for you to find boutiques that were interested in this sort of arrangement? Have you sold many this way?

  28. Congrats! I hope you have a healthy and easy pregnancy. I love you style & I'm now a follower. This hutch is super cute.

  29. Ok so a friend linked you on facebook and I'm so glad!! I LOVE YOUR BLOG!!! Your furniture is AMAZING!! So I have a question for you. You said you just got a paint sprayer and then did a black dresser. We just bought one to paint our piano black but it took a WHOLE GALLON of paint. That seems ridiculous to me! Am I wrong? It sprayed it on super thick and got ALL over the place. Doesn't seem like the same experience you've had and the people at home depot don't know what their talking about. Please fill me in. Did you get a specific sprayer for furniture? I was hoping to paint more furniture but I'm not sure I want to go through that mess and waste of paint again. Help! Thanks in advance! kath_doll@hotmail.com

  30. Oh, I know that piece was a challenge to strip, paint, stain, etc. It looks so good, though. Anything that was dated about it is totally transformed. Great work, as always!

  33. I grew up with a kitchen that had a hutch a lot like this one. I love it. :) Maybe someday I'll have a kitchen big enough to accommodate something similar!
Good luck with your pregnancy and the morning sickness. Drink lots of ginger tea! Being baby #4 you probably know how you deal best with it but I have a post on my blog about dealing with severe morning sickness (which I have had twice now, yay!) if you need some more ideas.
