Sultry Gray Sideboard

I have wanted to do a sideboard pretty much since I started redoing furniture, a desire made all the more palpable after seeing this gorgeous sideboard that my good friend Cassie from Primitive and Proper did many moons ago.  (This has to be one of my all-time fave furniture makeovers of all time.)

I came across this slightly-neglected-but-never-the-less-gorgeous French buffet at Goodwill and it became an immediate must have.  I LOVE the bowed drawer fronts!  (I had to do a little reconstructive surgery on the applique with some wood filler, but all’s well now…)

So I had a plan to paint her gray.  Cara needed a little bit of convincing, but I think she came around.  :)  A dark walnut stain on the top for a two-toned look and some heavy distressing, the original ornately beautiful hardware, and we called her done!

I think I’m in love… wishing I had more room in my house…

  4. I have room in mine! What kind of a deal would you give me? :-) I could advertise for you. ;-)

It doesn't look overly gray in the pictures, is it a really light gray?

  5. It doesn't look grey at all. At first, it seemed so castle-y grey when we began. I really love the walnut stain with the distressing. Where is the opera button? If I could sing AAAAAHHHLELUIA on here, I would.

  7. I can't believe that is the same piece of furniture. I think you are going to be the envy of everyone in the neighborhood. What a piece that turned out to be. You have a lot of talent and the colors are perfect. If you get tired of it or find it doesn't fit, send it my way!

  42. Hey,

found you from the CSI project and added your blog to my reader. Love your work! I am about to refinish my first piece of furniture for a buffet for my house. It is a french provincial piece much like the one above. But mine seems to have a laminate top? I really want to do the two tone look like you did on the freebie dresser. But not sure how I can do that. Do you only refinish real wood pieces? Am wondering if I could do a faux dark stain finish. Any advice you can give me would be much appreciated! Can't wait to go back and read through some of your older posts! :)
