I got this desk from the free section of my local Craigslist. It had a cute shape, but wasn’t winning any prizes for quality. I think it’s made of masonite. The top is pressboard with a laminate top.
Because I didn’t have any initial monetary investment in the piece, I felt liberated to go a little bit wild with it.
I got some fabric for $1.50 a yard at Joann’s last week when they had 50% off their red tag clearance fabrics, which gave me the color inspiration: Apple Green! I sprayed the original hardware cream, and decided to do a dark green chalkboard top for the desk, inspired by this little beaut by Miss Mustard Seed.
That chair looking familiar? It should. It’s from the same set as the chair for the studded desk I completed not long ago. (Thanks again, Valerie!!) It’s his funky twin! :P
To do the wavy edge on the chalkboard top, I just cut some painter's tape with scissors down the middle and taped it up like so:
So… Traditional?
… or Funky?
What’s your pleasure?

Love it! You can't go wrong with chalkboard paint. Love the green!
ReplyDeleteso cute! i change my furniture more than a friend of mine changes her underpants (or so she says....) so depending on my mood and day, i would have either in my house! :)
ReplyDeleteI loved the cream one, but the green, my oh my! Adorable!

Ficou divino!! Amei!
ReplyDeleteLove that green fun desk...what a great job you did....ove the painters tape trick there...may have to try that sometime!!~
ReplyDeleteI am glad to see you use the word 'funky' to describe the green set, because it is! The thing is, I have used that word on my blog and then I wondered whether its most common meaning in the US was different from the meaning you gave it here (which is the same meaning I gave it on my blog!) lol...in case you were wondering, I was concerned that it might be more commonly used to describe something that smells awful...these furniture finds of ours probably do smell 'funky' when we find them, but after we work our magic, they are FUNKY! :)
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful. The chalkboard with this tone of green works great, but then it is all toned down with the beautiful fabric on the chair. I can't imagine a better combination. I love it!

ReplyDeleteI love them both! I think the traditional would be cute if your desk was going to be in the living room, but I can totally see the funky desk in a craft room or teenager's room. Either way, I don't think you could go wrong with either one!
ReplyDeletei LOVE them both!!!!
ReplyDeleteThey are both fabulous desks! The cream so classy and elegant and the apple green so whimsical and just plain fun! Great fabric on the green chair. Love both of them!

The little green desk is adorable!! And, I love the use of the chalkboard paint. It reminds me of a 1950's desk I painted the same color green and added bright wooden flowers that I cut out of 1/4 in. plywood. It is on my blog if you'd like to see it. Thanks for sharing neat ideas!
