It is a solidly built little sucker, and HEAVY. The stamp on the inside says that it was from a Marriot. It had some holes drilled in the top, presumably from the TV swivel thingy. I filled the holes, but decided that a painted finish on the top surface would still show where the holes were.
Mod Podge to the rescue! I got a roll of damask wrapping paper from Hob Lob for $4.99, and used but a smidgen of the 50 square feet for this project. Lots left to craft another day!
I painted the body a satin black, and hit those wonderfully ornate pulls with some semi-gloss white. Just perfect to tie into the damask! Isn’t she purdy?!?! Not too bad for a buck!

Can’t wait to show you my funky lamp!
‘Till next time,

wow, i love what you did with it! it would look awesome as a nightstand with a bright turquoise or yellow lamp on it- so cute!
ReplyDeleteThat is SOOO pretty. I never find paper like that. I don't think our craft stores are as good as your craft stores in the US. Love the handles, very original.

So you just painted over the finish? We have bedroom furniture similar to this and I would LOVE to do this to it. It's definitely an 80's finish (cherry) and I'm ready to change it up... had it since I was 7-ish. I'd like to know if you just painted right over it. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteAshley (or Ben?) - I almost always prime the piece first, especially if it's a shiny finish. If its a really shiny finish, you might even do well to give it a little sanding before you prime. In this case, and if you're painting black, make sure to use a gray primer. Hope that helps! :)
ReplyDeletewow, nice job!!! truly creative on the top :) can't wait to see the lamp!
ReplyDeleteLove it! And I want it! It's just darling and the price is amazing too! I love mod podge and damask! Thanks for showing it off!

ReplyDeleteWow so gorgeous!!! I love that you added the damask print to the top!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! That thing was $1.00?!? That's just wrong...but oh so right. :) Well done.
ReplyDeleteReally love it! I love the white hardware...don't think I would have thought to do that!

What a great idea and it turned out so beautifully! I'll remember this one!
ReplyDeleteThis looks great! I love the damask and I justed used wrapping paper recently myself {on a smaller project}. I think it's great instead of scrap book paper for those larger areas, like this chest.
ReplyDeleteAnne Marie, Thanks so much! That's what I needed to know! :-)

This is beautiful! I'm a newbie and I'm wondering how you get the damask wrapping paper to stay, is there something over/under it? Thanks.
