Ornate Bombay Chest of Drawers

If you follow Twice Lovely on Facebook, you saw this gorgeous chest of drawers I picked up a couple of weeks ago.

I love the subtle bow-front drawers and all that detailing on the bottom.  It’s a very versatile size that could be used as a large bedside table, a small bedroom dresser, an entry piece, a dining buffet, really the possibilities are endless.

It had it’s kicks, scratches, and boo boos, but the shape was calling out to me! The biggest boo boo was that part of one foot had been broken off.  It didn’t effect the stability of the piece, but it certainly wasn’t helping it aesthetically.

For the repair, I used a product that I had been wanting to try out for a while now called Kwik Wood from JB Weld.  You can pick it up at Home Depot or Lowes for around $5 a tube.  I used a whole tube for this repair.  Once kneaded, you end up with a wad very much like an egg of silly putty.  Same consistency and everything.  :)

I just shaped the putty in the shape of the missing part, looking at the opposite foot for reference.

It sets up in about an hour, and you can sand it and paint it.  It worked so great!  It’s a great tool to have in your furniture refab arsenal!

Here’s how the finished foot looked once it was all painted.  You can’t even tell there was ever a problem.

Like always, my wild side and my side that needs to actually sell the furniture she paints were at war.  ;)  My first plan was to paint it a glazed metallic silver with a black top.  But, I decided on a little safer plan of attack and went with a creamy off white with a little bit of distressing and a heavy antiquing glaze.  I’m so glad I did, because I absolutely love how it turned out!  With all those details, it would have looked too Liberace in metallic.  :)  I finished off the old world look with a faux leather top, achieved with crumpled brown craft paper, Mod Podge, and some burnt umber craft paint.

Here she is all finished up!

You know that yummy plum paint I blogged about picking up at the oops counter last month?  I’ve been too scared to paint it on a piece of furniture yet, although I’m totally smitten with it.  Well, I snuck it in on this piece by painting the insides of the drawers the lovely plum. (It was difficult to capture this luscious color and do it justice.)

This piece is available for sale, so please contact me if you’d like more information.

Just wanted to remind you all, if you haven’t already done so, please stop by and check out Cara and my new Etsy shop, Garden Laundry, selling vintage bedding and linens.  These are a super duper source for upcycling vintage fabrics.

Great for you sewers! (I’m jealous of sewing skilz, BTW.)

And remember when I used a vintage table cloth to upholster these chairs?

  17. Love it, Anne Marie! Fabulous curves and detailing on this piece! The size is absolutely perfect. I love dressers/chests this size because they are just so versatile anywhere in the house. You did a great job on the repair and it turned out really nice. I have a dresser myself {about this size} to do; I'm just waiting on my first can of chalk paint.

  19. Ah! I'm so glad you were featured at Primitive & Proper. I remembered seeing *someone* use that amazing product on a foot, but couldn't remember what it was called or whose blog it was on! Thrilled to have found it again. ;-)

  20. Love the redo! I'm really interested in the Kwikwood. How cool is that! Now, can you sand that? Does it take stain and paint like regular wood does? I'll have to check it out! I've only ever used wood putty, this looks so much better for larger missing pieces!
